Fred E. "Chip" Masarie, Jr. MD
---Principal
After finishing two years of
a general surgery residency, Dr. Masarie has been doing informatics work for
over 20 years He initially worked in an academic environment, but has been in
industry for the past 14 years. He was an active participant of the first phase
of the UMLS project in the late 80’s. He has designed and created systems in the
areas of diagnostic decision support (QMR), drug reference/terminology (Camdat/First
DataBank), and electronic medical record (MedicaLogic/GE), as well as clinical
reporting/clinical data warehousing. He has personally spent thousands of hours
creating terminologies, normalizing user-entered data, and creating structured
representations of clinical concepts. His area of expertise lies in creating
healthcare terminologies that allow end-users to say what the need to say and
yet be able to ask questions of the data at a higher level of abstraction.
Dr. Masarie is a fellow of
the ACMI (American College of Medical Informatics) and has been a member of AMIA
for many years.
